“Well, I would think that if they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the Bidens. It’s a very simple answer. They should investigate the Bidens,” the president told reporters about Ukraine on Thursday. “Likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens. Because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine.”
The president has repeatedly condemned Hunter Biden’s Ukrainian business affiliations, and in July he pressed Zelensky to look into the Bidens’ dealings. That phone call landed the president in the middle of an impeachment inquiry in Congress.
Regardless of whether China launches an investigation into the presidential hopeful’s family, opponents of Trump criticized his comments, decrying the bold invitation to foreign intervention in U.S. politics and expressing worry that the comment will impact current trade talks.
When reporters asked Kudlow if Trump was joking in any way about the potential Chinese investigation, the White House economic adviser said: “I don’t honestly know.”
